Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, brought Chud Thai to the world stage after her official tour of Europe in the 1960s. The movement also gave a real boost to the livelihoods of rural artisans and weavers.
Today, let's learn how to wear the Pha Sa-phak, the traditional Thai pleated shoulder cloth, in five simple steps.
Step one: prepare. First, put on your chest wrap, called the Krajom-ok. Then drape the first layer of Sabai over it, snugly and neatly, in the traditional Thai way.
Step two: position the edge. Next, place the edge of the Pha Sa-phak at an angle, just below your chest line. You can use the left or the right side, whichever you prefer. Then pin it to the Krajom-ok with a safety pin or straight pin.
Step three: drape the cloth. Now, bring the cloth up over your shoulder and wrap it around your back, passing over the spot where you started. Then bring it diagonally across to the front, over the opposite shoulder.
Step four: adjust and smooth. Smooth the top edge so the cloth fits snugly against your body. Then fold the fabric under your armpit inward by about two inches. Smooth it down and tidy up the folds.
Step five: hide the end and secure it. Finally, fold any excess fabric at the shoulder and tuck it under the outer fabric. Pin it at the edge of the Krajom-ok. Then sew a few cross-stitches over the pinned area with a needle and thread. Once it's secure, carefully remove the pins.
And that's it, a clean, elegant finish.
